Amnesty International has called upon the Sri Lanka government to free hundreds of thousands of refugees detained in camps since the end of the country’s war with Tamil rebels.
According to Amnesty International more than 300,000 Tamils remained detained in deplorable conditions, a direct violation of international human rights covenants. Amnesty has also criticized the Sri Lanka’s government for restricting the movement and freedoms of those detained, saying the detainees were protected under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The government has insisted they will not release detainees until they can be certain they do not have ties to the Tamil rebels and Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona has said the “vast majority” of Sri Lankans were happy the conflict was over and did not want the situation to regress.
