Tablets and enhanced books: the future of education

It is great progress that a child can carry a tablet containing all the text books he needs, thus putting an end to the need to carry heavy backpacks. But it is better still if those tablets can provide enhanced content that support learning dynamics.

Many are in favor of taking tablets into the classroom. It could be a good way to enhance both teaching and learning, and also to prepare children and adolescents for the digital future that is just around the corner.

Technological innovation has been helping to transform education in the last few years. It all began with computing classrooms in school, and has now progressed so much that we are contemplating the possibility of providing each pupil with a tablet that has a Wi-Fi connection to the internet.

Pupils will be able to do everything with a single device: follow teachers’ explanations, take notes, do exercises, search for information, share content with other students, draw, print, project on a whiteboard, etc. All this is added to their ease of use, the immediacy that they provide, the interactivity, the possibility of using them anywhere at any time and, above all, how children and adolescents are motivated by the new technologies. With a tablet in their hands, many pupils may well show more interest in their lessons and improve their performance.

Another advantage of tablets for education is that they can provide enhanced books. As you know, Semantix is capable of enhancing content with definitions, pictures, video, audio… We thus help pupils to improve their comprehension and increase their knowledge about what they are reading by merely pressing on the words that interest them.

Furthermore, tablets can include Dixio dictionary technology. Pupils thus have access to renowned dictionaries every time they come across a concept or a word that they do not understand. By just pressing on the term, they see a pop-up window with the best context-specific definition.

As we can see, there are many reasons for introducing the new technologies into the classroom. In the United States they have been applying them to education for years, and are now introducing tablets and intend to provide all pupils with them. In Spain this is up to the Autonomous Regions, and only some of them are targeting the provision of a tablet to every student.
