Officials say the son of Mexico’s most wanted drug lord Joaquin Guzman aka “El Chapo” has been captured in Jalisco state. Marines arrested Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar Thursday in the city of Zapopan. It is unclear what led them to Guzman’s location.
Jesus Guzman, also known as “El Gordo,” is believed to have played a major role in helping his father run the Sinaloa drug cartel. According to Mexican Navy spokesman Jose Luis Vergara, Guzman managed cartel properties and “controlled most of the Sinaloa cartel’s illegal drug trade between Mexico and the United States.” Earlier this month the U.S. Treasury Department listed the 26-year-old on their Kingpin Act Designations list, which means sanctions prohibiting financial transactions with him were imposed. Guzman is also wanted in Illinois on trafficking charges.
"We congratulate the government of Mexico and the Calderon administration on another victory against the ruthless cartels. This is the first step in bringing another ruthless drug baron to justice,” said a spokesperson for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
A second Sinaloa cartel member identified as Kevin Beltran Rios was arrested along with Guzman. Both men were taken to Mexico City to be paraded in front of TV cameras.
