President Barack Obama Defends Canadian Healthcare System but Says it wouldn’t Work in U.S.

Speaking at the North American Leaders Summit in Mexico on Monday President Barack Obama defended the often criticized health care system instituted in Canada but insisted his own push for health care reform in America would not be modeled off that design.

Obama’s defense of the Canadian system was done in large part to combat those critics who are opposed to any form of a government controlled healthcare system. Those same critics often point to Canada as a reason to avoid such a system, saying residents can often wait long periods of time before seeing a doctor and can be denied treatment based on cost and availability.

To offset those critics Obama stated, “I've said that the Canadian model works for Canada. It would not work for the United States, in part simply because we've evolved differently. So, we've got to develop a uniquely American approach to this problem.”

According to Obama the current system in place in the United States was far from perfect and left nearly 47 million people uninsured. Obama stressed despite ranking first in money spent per person on health care the U.S. doesn’t rank first in outcomes.

He went on to say, “We're not doing better than a lot of other advanced, developed countries that are spending much less per person.”

Obama was sure to emphasize that despite the problems with the current health care system he wasn’t trying to scrap the whole thing saying he wanted a system that “continues the role of the private marketplace, but provides people who don't have health insurance or have fallen through the cracks in the private marketplace a realistic and meaningful option.”
