Recently acquired free-agent pitcher Pedro Martinez will start his first game with the Philadelphia Phillies when his squad faces the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Wednesday.
With Martinez now in the starting rotation manager Charlie Manuel opted to send lefty Jamie Moyer to the bullpen. Moyer posted a 10-9 record with a 5.47 ERA as a starter this year.
As for Martinez, the three-time Cy Young Award winner is coming off three rehab assignments in which he posted a 1-1 mark with a 5.11 ERA. The 37-year-old right-hander hasn’t pitched in a major league game since 2008 when he was a member of the New York Mets.
He was signed by the Phillies on July 15 and immediately placed on the disabled list due to a sore shoulder.
