Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the sister of President John F.
Kennedy and the mother of California First Lady Maria Shriver, died early Tuesday
morning. Shriver’s family announced that she died around 2 a.m. but did not disclose
the cause of death. She was 88.
In a statement, Shriver’s family called her a “living
prayer, a living advocate, a living center of power.”
“She set out to change the world and to change us, and
she did that and more,” the statement said.
Her younger brother, Senator Edward Kennedy, paid tribute
to Shriver for her “great humor, sharp wit and…boundless passion to make a
difference.”
Shriver was inspired by her mentally disabled sister
Rosemary Kennedy to organize the first Special Olympics in 1968. Her son now
runs the organization.
Shriver was listed in critical condition at the Cape Cod
Hospital in Massachusetts for the past week. Family members, including Maria
and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, had gathered at the hospital. She
is survived by her husband, Robert Shriver, their 5 children and 19
grandchildren.
