After being held captive by Somali militants for nine months four European aid workers and two Kenyan pilots have been released and are said to be in good health.
The aid workers, two French women, a Bulgarian woman and a Belgian man, had been working with Action Against Hunger when they, along with the two pilots who worked for Air Traffic, were taken hostage at an airstrip in Dhusa-Mareb last November.
With no real central government capable of ruling the country Somalia has been a breeding ground for Islamist insurgents aiming to establish Islamic law. The country has seen a number of aid workers kidnapped and as a result several non-governmental organizations have scaled back their perations in the country.
