Officials in Mexico say three federal officers died Monday at the hands of two fellow officers suspected of being involving in a drug trafficking ring. According to the Public Security Ministry, the officers were shot while trying to take the two suspects into custody at the Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City.
"The two officers under investigation opened fire to avoid arrest when they spotted the federal police's investigation unit,” the ministry said in a statement.
The two suspects fled the scene and have not been apprehended. "The Federal Police has identified the two officers who opened fire and several investigative units are now focused on capturing them," said the Public Safety Department.
The shooting happened at Terminal 2 near the food court. Travelers sought cover under chairs and tables. Two officers died at the airport and the third died at a nearby hospital. No civilians were hurt.
