Rescue officials in Taiwan now fear that hundreds of people living in a mountain village may have been killed following a landslide triggered by Typhoon Morakot.
While efforts to find survivors continues officials have said more than 700 people are believed to be missing and presumed dead in Hsiaolin and surrounding villages in the southern region of Taiwan. With roadways washed away rescue officials have been forced to send helicopters into the area to pull survivors out.
At least 70 people in Hsiaolin and the neighboring village of Namahsia have been confirmed dead
Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan over the weekend with strong winds and record level rain fall while causing massive flooding and destroying buildings, homes and farmland.
