House Democratic Leaders Drop Push for New Passenger Jets for Senior Government Officials

House Democratic leaders have said they will not pursue their original plan purchase four new passenger jets after the party was criticized for adding an additional $330 million to the Air Force’s 2010 budget for the two C-37 jets and two C-40 jets.

According to the Pentagon the Department of Defense never requested the addition of the four jets and had actually requested $220 million for new planes but the House wanted to spend $550 million for the jets.

The $636 billion defense spending bill was passed last month but critics who have reviewed the bill have pointed at several programs that appeared to generate waste. Chief among those programs was the new planes and despite the backlash Rep. John Murtha, the Pennsylvania Democrat who chairs the panel that approved the additional spending, defended the plan saying the new planes were needed to replace the outdated models currently used by officials.

While Murtha defended the program he abandoned the plan on Monday saying, “If the Department of Defense does not want these aircraft, they will be eliminated from the bill.”
