Bad weather has been blamed for the deaths of at least 95 people in southeast Bangladesh. Authorities in Chittagong region said heavy rain caused deadly landslides and flooding, and brought bad lightening. Mohammad Serajul Huq Khan, the Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong, said the death toll will probably rise.
"We've recovered 95 bodies so far, and the death toll may go up as many people, as claimed by the relatives, are still missing," Khan said. "Most of the people died in landslides, while drowning and lightning were the other causes of death. At least 37 died in Cox's Bazar, 36 in Bandarban and 22 in Chittagong city."
Rescue teams have been sent to the area to look for survivors.
Meanwhile, an estimated 200,000 people remains stranded in Chittagong because of the flooding. Officials said Wednesday the relief effort has already begun with food and other necessities sent to the area.
