Andy Kessler, revered as a pioneer in the skateboarding scene in New York City, has died at the age of 49 after suffering an allergic reaction to a wasp sting while in Montauk, Long Island on Monday.
Know as the “Grandmaster of 108,” Kessler was an integral player in building the first skatepark in Manhattan and went on to design and build several more skateparks throughout the city, becoming a major influence in attracting greater recognition to skateboarding.
While Kessler cemented his name in the sport as part of the skate crew The Soul Artists of Zoo York in the late 1970s he will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to ensuring the skate culture in New York continued in the next generation.
