Costa Rican President Oscar Arias has announced that he has been diagnosed with swine flu but stated, “Apart from the fever and a sore throat, I feel well and in good shape to carry out my work by telecommuting.”
Arias has been busy mediating the current political crisis in Honduras, attempting to negotiate a solution to the recent coup that saw President Manuel Zelaya forced from power. Despite contracting the H1N1 influenza virus Arias has said his condition will not prevent him from carrying out his responsibilities as head of state.
The 68-year-old leader had been displaying flu-like symptoms for several days before he was diagnosed with swine flu on Tuesday. He is expected to remain at his residence for about a week where he will receive medical care for the virus.
