It’s official: NBC has axed Ann Curry as co-host of the Today Show. After days of rumors, Curry announced Thursday she will no longer appear alongside Matt Lauer.
“Today is going to be my last morning as regular co-host of ‘Today’,” Curry said as she fought back tears. "This is not as I ever expected, to leave this couch after 15 years. But I'm so grateful, especially to all of you who watch.”
“For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line, but man I did try!...And, for all of you who did watch, I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she continued.
“It’s not ‘goodbye’ by a long shot. We will continue to put you on planes and you’ll be with us at the Olympics and, most importantly, you’ve made us better, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Lauer said.
Curry said NBC has given her “some fancy new title” as an international news correspondent. She will report from all around the world and appear on various shows, including Today.
Recent low ratings and Curry’s apparent lack of chemistry with Lauer is rumored to be at the heart of NBC’s problem. Curry, 55, stepped up as co-host alongside Lauer just over a year ago when Meredith Vieira left the post. Before that she worked as Today’s news anchor for 14 years.
NBC has not announced who will take Curry’s place.
