1 Dead In Fort Bragg Shooting, Shooter Critically Wounded

Military officials say the soldier responsible for Thursday afternoon’s deadly shooting at Fort Bragg, North Carolina was facing court martial for the theft of a tool box from the base’s motor pool. The soldiers name has not been released, but official say he has been an Army specialist for 8 years and previously served in Afghanistan. He is from the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade.

The shooting occurred during a safety brief about the Fourth of July holiday. Officials say the Army specialist shot his battalion commander multiple times in the head and chest before turning the gun on himself. Soldiers at the scene subdued the shooter. The commander died and the shooter was critically wounded. A third soldier suffered a minor wound.

A Fort Bragg spokesman said the motive for the shooting remains unclear. The attack is under investigation. “This is a tragedy for our community. We don’t yet know the reasons for the shooting, but are working with the unit and the affected families to help them through this difficult period,” said Col. Kevin Arata.
