In divorce papers filed Thursday in New York City, Katie Holmes cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for her split from Tom Cruise. According to TMZ, Holmes requested sole legal custody and “primary residential custody” of their daughter Suri, 6. She also wants Cruise, 49, to pay “a suitable amount” of child support.
Holmes, 33, announced the split Friday in a statement released by her lawyer, Jonathan Wolfe. "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest,” Wolfe said.
Cruise’s rep later released a statement saying "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out."
Holmes and Cruise began dating in 2005 and welcomed Suri in April 2006. They tied the knot at Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy in November 2006.
This was the first marriage for Holmes and the third for Cruise. The Rock of Ages star was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman.
