People call her a hero after she chased down a hit and run driver who ran into a mother and her two young drivers. But Beatrix Jimenez doesn’t see it that way. She was just doing what most people with a heart would do if they saw such a tragedy play out in front of the eyes.
Last Saturday, Eloisa Madrigal, 45, and her two daughters were crossing an intersection when a driver ran a red light and plowed into them, knocking them sixty feet in the air.
Jimenez was sitting at that intersection waiting for the light to turn when she witnessed the accident and saw the driver take off. That’s when she sprang into action and chased the driver down in her car. She cornered the driver, Jessicah Cowan, with her Honda.
Jimenez says, “I got out of my car and asked her ‘Do you know what you did?’ And she shook her head. She showed no pain or guilt… it looked like she didn’t care.”
Madrigal’s oldest daughter, Osmara was killed. She suffered from brain injuries and is in a coma. Her younger daughter Grecia Meza also suffered head trauma, but is expected to recover.
As for Cowan, 33, she faces charges of felony murder, driving under the influence involving bodily injury and DUI with a blood alcohol of .02 along with possession of marijuana.
Jorge Meza says his daughter’s death “tore him to pieces,” but calls Jimenez a hero. Drivers who take a person’s life should be held accountable and without the swift action of Jimenez they may have never caught the driver.
