Last Friday, news broke that Katie Holmes had filed for divorce from Tom Cruise. And even though the couple has a solid financial pre-nuptial, their divorce could take a nasty turn when it comes to the matter of custody of their 6 year-old daughter Suri.
Katie asked for sole custody of Suri. The consensus is that Katie filed for divorce in New York since judges in the state are less likely to grant joint custody because conflicts between parents affect their children. The state decides custody based on what is in the child’s best interest with no gender bias.
In New York, divorce attorneys are able to get dissolutions for a broader range of issues, including disagreements on how to raise children. Since Katie asked for sole custody, it has left many to wonder if Cruise’s involvement in Scientology is the driver behind the divorce.
The Church of Scientology, of which Cruise is leader, has come under increased scrutiny over the last few years. And some claim that Katie doesn’t want to indoctrinate Suri into the religion. Children as young as five attend a school called Sea Org, and ex-church members have been highly critical of the school.
New reports have surfaced which allege Katie and Suri are being stalked by members of the Church of Scientology, according to TMZ. The Church denies these rumors.
Both Katie and Tom have a team of highly qualified divorce lawyers, so the custody fight over Suri could take a nasty turn.
Child custody is one of the most contentious issues in a divorce. Family law attorneys work hard to make certain custody issues are decided with a child’s best interest in mind.
