Officials in Cuba say dozens of people are ill and at least 3 people have died in a cholera outbreak in the eastern city of Manzanillo. Several drinking wells are believed to be the source of the outbreak. Authorities say water samples are being tested and steps have already been taken to stop the outbreak from spreading further. About 1,000 residents are currently receiving preventative treatment.
The Cuban Health Ministry said a total of 53 cases have been confirmed. Three of those infected have died. All three victims were elderly people above 65 years old.
"The Manzanillo outbreak is controlled and the number of cases are dropping as a result of the sanitary, hygienic and anti-epidemic measures being taken," the Health Ministry said.
Cholera is a bacterial infection that causes diarrhea and vomiting. The last case of cholera in Cuba was recorded in 1882.
