Treating Drug Addiction With More Drugs – Where Does it End?

The Narconon Trois-Rivieres drug rehab program continues to see many addicts go from drug to drug all throughout their addiction, and never really see any clean time.  Drug users will tend to use many different drugs illegally and legally; legally meaning given by doctors to help curb their drug addiction or handle emotional and psychological problems, normally caused by drug addiction.  “All to often when families call our counselors, a common topic is their loved one is being treated with more drugs to help them stop their initial drug use,” says Nick Hayes, a representative of Narconon Trois-Rivieres. “Families must understand that if these medications are not legitimately needed, it can make the initial detox and withdrawal period very difficult, which can make the addict fearful of getting clean.”

In fact, just last month in Vancouver some controversial research surfaced talking about giving free heroin to addicts.  The addicts will be able to go to a specific clinic and receive a free injection of heroin or hydromorphene (Dilaudid).  This select group of addicts will go through this yearlong study and eventually be switched to taking pills orally for the same effect.  The overall goal is to help limit the costs of handling the severely addicted, and give them some hope of recovery.  “This is a common situation for some of our clients who have been through multiple forms of treatment prior to coming to us.  They are normally left with very few options and a study like this can seem very appealing if they have given up hope on recovery,” says Hayes.

Helping the addict is the right approach, and rehabilitation centers across the country specialize in doing this everyday.  Substituting one drug for another when it is not necessarily needed does not always help a person struggling with a drug addiction.  For more information visit the Narconon Trois-Rivieres webs site at http://narconon.ca/.
