Sales increased $547 million, or 78% from $704 million in the second quarter of 2008, to $1.25 billion in the second quarter of 2009. Sales for the first six months of 2009 were $2.42 billion, an increase of $1.06 billion or 79% over sales for the first six months of 2008. Gross profit increased $287 million, or 90% from $317 million (or 45.0% of sales) in the second quarter of 2008 to $604 million (or 48.2% of sales) in the second quarter of 2009. Gross profit increased $0.54 billion, or 89%, from $0.61 billion (or 44.8% of sales) for the six months ended June 30, 2008, to $1.15 billion (or 47.5% of sales) for the six months ended June 30, 2009.
