USC QB Aaron Corp Out for 1-2 Weeks, Matt Barkley to Start

USC quarterback Aaron Corp will be out for 1-2 weeks after an MRI on Wednesday revealed a small crack on the head of his left fibula.

Freshman sensation Matt Barkley will now step in as the starting quarterback, which he lost after a heavy battle against Corp during spring training. Corp beat out Barkley and former Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain to earn the starting position left vacant by Mark Sanchez.

“Matt's going to try and make the most of this opportunity," USC coach Pete Carroll said in a statement.

Corp was hurt Monday when a lineman rolled into his knee, though he missed only a few plays before returning to practice.

However, Corp couldn't practice Tuesday because of pain and swelling. An X-ray was inconclusive but revealed no ligament damage. The injury will not require surgery.

Barkley entered this season as the No. 1 high school football prospect in the nation from last year’s class. He received even more attention after grasping the complicated Carroll offense quicker than expected.

USC’s season opener is on September 5 as they host San Jose State. Their second game, which is on the road at Ohio State, has national championship implications.
