Taiwan has appealed for international help in locating and rescuing the thousands of people still missing or stranded as a result of Typhoon Morakot.
As part of that appeal Taiwan was requesting a large cargo aircraft that would be able to drop earth diggers and machinery into remote mountain areas where the majority of the missing villagers are believed to be.
Officials fear that thousands of people may have been buried in the devastating mudslides that resulted from heavy downpours and strong winds associated with Typhoon Morakot. As it stands the Taiwanese government has confirmed 108 deaths but President Ma Ying-jeou has said he expects that number to climb significantly.
In an attempt to lessen that toll President Ma stressed “We welcome all forms of aid, and we also need equipment, especially helicopters that can carry cranes.” That heavy machinery is badly needed in the remote mountain areas as most of the roads have been destroyed, slowing the rescue efforts.
