College Football: Florida Gators Top Sports Illustrated Preseason Rankings

The Florida Gators sit atop the Sports Illustrated college football preseason rankings on Wednesday.

The reigning national champions return six offensive starters, including 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, and the entire defensive starting lineup that held Oklahoma’s prolific defense to just 14 points in the BCS title game.

Tebow loses star wide receiver Percy Harvin, but still keep the triumvirate of Brandon James, Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey in the backfield.

Linebacker Brandon Spikes leads the defense as one of the nation’s top linebackers. Defensive end Carlos Dunlap and cornerbacks Joe Haden and Ahmad Black are also amongst the nation’s best at their respective positions.

The Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, USC Trojans and Virginia Tech Hokies round out the top five. Texas and OU will once again battle in the Big 12 as Colt McCoy and Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford duel for the rights as the best quarterback in the conference (and nation). Safety Taylor Mays becomes the latest in a string of defensive stalwarts for the Trojans, while quarterback Tyrod Taylor conjures up images of former Hokie Michael Vick in Blacksburg.

The Ole Miss Rebels, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Alabama Crimson Tide, Boise State Broncos and Ohio State Buckeyes finish out Sports Illustrated’s top 10.
