Les Paul, Legendary Guitarist, Dies at 94

Les Paul, the legendary guitarist and innovator of the electric guitar, died on Thursday. He was 94.

According to Gibson Guitar, Paul died of complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital. His family and friends were by his side.

Born Lester William Polsfuss in Waukesha, Wisconsin on June 9, 1915, Paul began performing publicly as a honky-tonk guitarist at the age of 13. He dropped out of high school at age 17 to play in Sunny Joe Wolverton's Radio Band in St. Louis. His first recordings were done in 1936, and in 1938, he moved to New York to begin his tenure on national radio with Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians.

Soon thereafter, Paul would embark on what would become his legacy. He began constructing his own electric guitar in the 1930s, but started creating his own guitar in the 1940s. His model, which would become the template for Gibson's best-selling electric, the Les Paul model, was introduced in 1952.

Paul is also credited for such innovations as overdubbing, delay and phasing effects, and multitrack recording.
