Les Paul Dies at 94

Les Paul, the musician who created the Gibson Les Paul guitar and other studio technology, has died. Paul died in White Plains, New York from complications of pneumonia. He was 94.

Paul's innovations, such as mutitrack recording and tape delay, made him one of the most important figures in recording music. His creations helped make rock ‘n’ roll and modern music popular.

Paul played guitar with several bands and singers including Fred Waring, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and the Andrews Sisters and his own Les Paul Trio in the 1930s and 40s. In 1948, Paul was involved in a serious car accident that injured his arm. He asked the doctor to set his arm permanently in a guitar-playing position.  In the early 50s he had several hits with his then-wife Mary Ford including How High the Moon and Vaya Con Dios. He continued playing the guitar at clubs into his 90s.

Paul is perhaps best known for his Gibson Les Paul, a solid-body guitar he built in 1952. He is a apart of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Inventors Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

"The world has lost a truly innovative and exceptional human being today. I cannot imagine life without Les Paul. He would walk into a room and put a smile on anyone's face. His musical charm was extraordinary and his techniques unmatched anywhere in the world,” said Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar.

Paul is survived by 4 children, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
