PGA Championship at Hazeltine Leaderboard: Tiger Woods Plays Bogey-Free Opening Round to Shoot 5-Under and Hold Lead
Tiger Woods was nearly perfect at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota on Thursday as the world’s No. 1 golfer looked determined to capture his first major of the year, playing bogey-free and firing a 5-under 67 to lead after one round at the PGA Championship.
Woods had several chances to actually lower that 67 but missed puts that could have cut at least three strokes off his total. While he may have missed a few opportunities Woods has some nice personal history to back his quest for a major as this was just the third time in his career he played a bogey-free round at a major, the other two resulted in wins at the 200 U.S. Open and the 2000 British Open.
Woods has some familiar company atop the leaderboard as Padraig Harrington rebounded from a bogey on the first hole to shoot a 4-under 68 on the day and heads into Day 2 in second. Woods and Harrington are coming off a great showdown at the Bridgestone Invitational before the Irishman’s disastrous experience on number 16 cost him the victory.
