Women and Men in Drug Rehab or Alcohol Treatment

Recent events reveal female drinking is on the rise

Studies and surveys conducted by various state and federal agencies have shown that the ratio of males to females who enter drug rehab or alcohol treatment is 2.3 to 1 respectively. Recent census data indicates an almost even number of men and women in the US.  There are several factors that contribute to this unbalanced number. Some research indicates that women are less likely to abuse substances than men. Other studies show that women face other difficulties in getting and staying in treatment because of reasons like childcare, basic access and other reasons.

There are other differences between men and women in the area of substance abuse. While men are most likely to be in drug rehab or alcohol treatment for alcoholism or softer drugs such as marijuana, women tend to enter treatment for harder drugs such as heroin or cocaine. While alcohol remains the primary substance of abuse for both men and women who have entered substance abuse treatment, 22% of women reported that cocaine was their primary substance of abuse compared to 14% of men.

There is currently an alarming trend with a dramatic increase of females being charged for DUI. Nationwide the numbers of male DUI’s are slowly falling, while DUI’s by females have increased thirty percent year over year. This alarming indicator appears to be part of a continuing trend. One troubling characteristic about this trend is that several of these arrests are of mothers WITH children in the vehicle at the time of arrest for a DUI.

Just last week in New York’s Westchester County, Diane Schuler crashed her minivan filled with 5 children in to another vehicle holding 2 adults while entering the Taconic Parkway traveling in the wrong direction. These horrible tragedies raise awareness and open a door of opportunity for loved ones to take action if they know someone that may need help or may be struggling with addiction to alcohol or other illicit substances. Unfortunately tragic events like this have the power to awaken and make people who engage in similar behaviors aware of how dangerous these behaviors can be.
