Andy Kessler, Legendary NYC Skateboarder, Dies of Insect Bite at 49

Andy Kessler, a legendary skateboarder in New York City, died unexpectedly in Montauk, Long Island after being stung by an insect, according to authorities Wednesday.

Kessler, 49, became sick after being stung around 4:30 p.m. Monday while helping a friend build a deck at a Montauk residence, East Hampton Town cops said. The insect was possibly a wasp.

The friend rushed Kessler to the Montauk Medical Center but the hospital was closed for the night, according to the New York Post. With Kessler's pulse diminishing, the friend drove him to a Montauk firehouse. EMTs then took Kessler by ambulance to Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The official cause of death was a heart attack induced by an insect sting, according to reports.

Kessler became an underground legend during the 1970s when he became an original member of the legendary Souls Artists of Zoo York graffiti and skateboarding collective. According to Wikipedia, Kessler was also a designer of skate parks.
