Ernest Borgnine passed away over the weekend at the age of 95. The actor’s manager, Lynda Bensky, confirmed he died of kidney failure Sunday afternoon at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
"It's a very sad day. The industry has lost someone great, the caliber of which we will never see again. A true icon. But more importantly, the world has lost a sage and loving man who taught us all how to 'grow young.' His infectious smile and chuckle made the world a happier place,” Bensky said.
Borgnine launched his acting career in 1951 after serving two stints in the Navy. His big break came two years later in From Here to Eternity, starring Frank Sinatra. In 1955 he won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Marty. Borgnine is also well known for his role as Lt. Commander Quinton McHale in the World War II sitcom McHale’s Navy. The show ran for four seasons from 1962 to 1966.
Borgnine’s career spans over six decades and includes more than 200 film and TV credits. He continued working in his later years, appearing on ER in 2009 and providing the voice for Mermaid Man on the cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants.
The actor was married five times. He is survived by his fifth wife, Tova, and his four children.
