Wake Wins Battle of Field Goals, Takes ACC Championship 9-6

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons (11-2) kicked their way to their first ACC title in 36 years and earning a bid to the Orange Bowl with a 9-6 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-4).

Sam Swank’s three field goals trumped the two kicked by Georgia Tech’s Travis Bell as both teams struggled to mount much of an offense.

The lack of offensive action and strong defensive presence had sent both teams into halftime deadlocked in a 3-3 tie.

Tech had taken the lead in the fourth quarter with a 34-yard field goal from Bell but Swank answered his adversary with a 33-yard field goal to tie the score at 6-6. Swanks second field goal of the game came after a Reggie Ball interception.

With just over three minutes remaining in the game Swank kicked what would prove to be the game-winner, a 22-yard field goal.

Riley Skinner passed for 202 yards to lead Wake to their first ACC Championship in 36 years.

Reggie Ball had a game to forget throwing two interceptions while completing just 9-29 pass attempts for 127 yards. Calvin Johnson caught eight of Bell’s completions for 116 yards.
