The UCLA Bruins did what many people felt was impossible, they knocked of the heavily favored USC Trojans and re-ignited the BCS Championship debate.
From the beginning of the game the Bruins put it to there cross town rivals, and an impressive 91-yard drive, capped by a one-yard touchdown run from Patrick Cowan gave UCLA a 7-0 first quarter advantage.
USC cut deficit to 7-2 after recording a safety at the beginning of the second quarter. The sack came as a result of a holding call on the Bruins while their quarterback, Patrick Cowan, was in the end zone. They then took the lead on a C.J. Gable one-yard touchdown run. The Trojans went into halftime with a 9-7 lead.
The Bruins were able to grab the lead back after Justin Medlock kicked a 22-yard field goal and UCLA went into the fourth quarter in front 10-9. Medlock added a 31-yard field goal in the final quarter to push the lead to 13-9.
With time running out in the fourth quarter the Trojans mounted one final drive. That drive ended on John David Booty interception that sealed the upset for the Bruins.
The UCLA victory snapped a seven game losing streak against USC.
The Trojans, the PAC-10 Champions, will be playing in the Rose Bowl. UCLA is scheduled to take on Florida State in the Emerald Bowl. As for the BCS Championship game, Ohio State’s opponent will be announced Sunday.
