A massive $3.2 million yacht sank for unknown reasons in Lake Tahoe early Monday morning, California authorities have confirmed. About a dozen people were said to have been on the boat when it began to sink. No injuries or deaths have been reported.
Witnesses say the 85-foot, 222-ton Sierra Rose began sinking around 3 a.m. while docked at the Tahoe Keys Marina. Hours later the yacht rested on the lake bed, and the third floor of the vessel was the only part left out of the water. Furniture and other house items could be seen floating inside.
The incident is under investigation. “It’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. My idea is it was so ugly someone had to sink it,” Ron Parker of the Tahoe Keys Property Association told reporters.
The Sierra Rose was sold at auction to an unidentified Nevada man in 2008. The 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom vessel rented for $2,000 per night. It boasts several luxurious amenities, including a salon and a helicopter pad.
