Missing Ship with Russian Crew Reportedly Spotted Off African Coast

The Maltese-flagged cargo ship that has been missing for more than two weeks has reportedly been spotted off the coast of Africa yet details of the sighting have not been confirmed.

A massive search of the Atlantic has been underway in search of the Arctic Sea along with its 15-member Russian crew since it was last spotted on July 30 while in the Bay of Biscay. The Russian navy had sent five warships and several smaller vessels to search for the cargo ship that was scheduled to reach an Algerian port on August 4 to deliver timber.

Over the past several days many observers had hinted that the 4,000-tonne cargo ship had been hijacked, possibly by a group who had a Russian commercial dispute.

On Friday French officials reportedly spotted the Arctic Sea about 400 miles off the coast of Cape Verde and notified Russian authorities. Russia has sent a ship to the area to confirm the sighting.
