A production modelling and simulation tool has put pharmaceutical maker Sanofi-Aventis on track to save £3m-a-year from factory efficiencies.The firm installed UK-based Lanner's Witness modelling software at its Fawdon site, which packs drugs in containers ranging from 10kg to 300kg.

The study showed Sanofi-Aventis how to re-jig its production lines in order to maximise efficiency. The result of the re-jig was £1.4m-worth of inventory cost savings in just six months.
Trevor Norman, Sanofi-Aventis' continuous improvement manager, said the factory has 11 lines. The mix of variables, which included quantity, capacity and frequency of products made it too complex to maximise efficiency manually, so it turned to Lanner.
