Allen Shellenberger, Lit Drummer, Dies of Brain Cancer at Age 39
Allen Shellenberger, the drummer for the rock band Lit, died Thursday at age 39. The cause of death was brain cancer.
Shellenberger had been struggling with his bout with brain cancer since 2008 when he was diagnosed with a malignant glioma brain tumor. He immediately underwent clinical trials, chemotherapy and radiation at the Cedars-Sinai Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute. His treatments were documented in an "ABC World News Tonight" piece that aired in May of that year, according to MTV.
In order to pay for his treatments, his Lit bandmates threw benefit shows, which featured performances by their friends Sugar Ray and Adrian Young of No Doubt, and held eBay auctions, with bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Maroon 5, the Dave Matthews Band and Queens of the Stone Age donating items for bid.
Shellenberger is survived by his daughter, Giovanna Mackey; his mother, Connie James; and his father, Paul Shellenberger.
