Hillary Clinton Urges Scotland to Block Release of Lockerbie Bomber

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged Scotland’s Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to block the early release of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi.

Megrahi is currently serving a life sentence for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland that killed 270 people. He was convicted of murder in January 2001 and sentenced to serve his sentence at Greenock Prison but now appears set to be released next week on compassionate grounds following a meeting with MacAskill.

The decision to release Megrahi is based on his current condition as he suffers from terminal prostate cancer and is said to be gravely ill.

Despite his current health condition relatives of the victims aboard Pan Am 103 have expressed outrage over the decision and now Clinton has taken up the cause to keep Megrahi behind bars. Clinton has reportedly spoken with MacAskill and strongly urged him to reconsider the release.

Megrahi, a former Libyan special agent, has denied any involvement in the bombing. While he has filed appeals since his conviction he abandoned his latest so as to gain freedom next week. As part of Scottish law a prisoner cannot be released criminal proceedings are still active.

While there has been widespread speculation that Megrahi would be freed next week the Scottish government has said no decision on his future has been made.
