One week after Typhoon Morakot devastated the southern coast of Taiwan and left at least 120 people confirmed dead President Ma Ying-jeou has apologized for the country’s slow response, telling reporters “We could have done better and we could have been faster.”
The apology comes as more than 400 people are still missing and feared dead following a mudslide in the village of Hsiaolin. While Taiwanese troops have been working to rescue those missing the efforts have been hampered due to roads being blocked or washed away.
With roads destroyed the rescue efforts have had to rely almost exclusively on air operations but that has left several survivors stranded for days without food or water.
The government has since asked for international help in the rescue and relief efforts, requesting heavy machinery to clear roads and prefabricated homes to house the survivors.
