Finnish police have said they have received a ransom demand for the missing cargo vessel, Arctic Sea, but they have yet to confirm whether it is genuine.
According to the demand the lives of the 15-member Russian crew would be at stake if the ransom payment wasn’t met.
It has been just over two weeks since the last confirmed sighting of the Arctic Sea as it passed through the Bay of Biscay. The 4,000-tonne cargo ship had been due to drop its cargo of timber at an Algerian port on Aug. 4 but never arrived.
On Friday there were reports that the Maltese-flagged vessel had been spotted off the coast of Cape Verde but those sightings have yet to be confirmed.
There has been widespread speculation that the vessel had been hijacked by pirates but there have also been reports that a Russian commercial dispute may have played a role in its disappearance.
