The NFL is midway through its first week of preseason and if the first two days of games are any indication the 2009 season should carry plenty of storylines. Tom Brady is back and his New England Patriots looked impressive while Mark Sanchez took his first snaps with the NY Jets and appears ready to live up to the hype. Pittsburgh looks primed for another Super Bowl run and the Baltimore Ravens once again look dominant on defense.
On Saturday there is a six-game schedule with plenty of interesting games that could shape how the season unfolds.
Last year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Matt Ryan will be back for the Atlanta Falcons and look to lead the team to its first back-to-back winning seasons in franchise history. They’ll be facing the Detroit Lions who are coming off the NFL’s first 0-16 season in history but plenty of attention will be on new quarterback Matt Stafford. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. ET.
The Chicago Bears will also be in action and with new quarterback Jay Cutler leading the offense expectations are high. They’ll be travelling to take on the Buffalo Bills who will be without their new wide receiver Terrell Owens who is still nursing a toe injury. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
For the Cleveland Browns the season has already started rough with the loss of Donte’ Stallworth for the year. It’s still up in the air as to who will lead the offense as Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson continue to battle for the QB position. Cleveland will be facing the Green Bay Packers who are now into their second season with Aaron Rodgers at QB and fans are ready for a playoff push. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
After a disappointing end to last season the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a long offseason to think about their late season collapse and know they can’t afford a bad year in the tough NFC South. They get their preseason underway against the Tennessee Titans who already have one win under their belt after beating the Buffalo Bills in the Hall of Fame game. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
Matt Cassel led the New England Patriots to an 11-5 record last year and just missed the AFC playoffs and his move to the Kansas City Chiefs has many hoping he can replicate his success from a year ago. That could be difficult as the Chiefs had one of the worst offenses in the league and several question marks remain. Kansas City will be hosting the Houston Texans who continue to search for their first playoff berth but Saturday they’ll be without top pick, linebacker Brian Cushing, due to a knee injury. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
The San Diego Chargers made a miraculous run into the playoffs one year ago and they’ll be looking for the postseason once again as they have plenty of weapons to make a Super Bowl run. San Diego gets their preseason underway against the Seattle Seahawks who are coming off an awful 4-12 mark and could find themselves in another year of struggles. Kickoff is set for 10:00 p.m. ET.
