Police shot to death an 18-year-old student that had been accused of robbing a student of two PlayStation 3 game consoles. Peyton Strickland, a Cape Fear Community College student, was suspected of stealing the popular units from a student at University of North Carolina-Wilmington the day PlayStation 3 debuted.
The student had reported to police that he was attacked by two men and robbed of the two PS3 units that he had purchased earlier that day.
Arrest warrants were issued for the two men allegedly responsible for the crime and police were sent to Strickland’s house. New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey said “If this boy would've come to the door, opened the door, we probably wouldn't be talking.”
As it turned out Strickland had approached the door just as police were making a forced entry. While Strickland was unarmed, he may have been holding a game controller in his hand that led to the police shooting.
Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting that occurred on Friday.
The second man named in the arrest warrant, a UNC-Wilmington student, was apprehended at another location, he was released on Saturday after posting bail.
