Michael Phelps admitted to police that he had been
drinking about an hour and 15 minutes before he was involved in an accident last
Thursday, but a police source says the alcohol wasn’t a factor in the crash.
Phelps, who said he drank a beer before the crash, was
driving a Cadillac Escalade when it collided with a Honda Civic, which hit a
parked car. Phelps showed no signs of alcohol impairment.
Police say the driver of the Accord, Amanda E. Virkus,
was at fault as she failed to obey a red light, which caused the accident.
Phelps was cited for driving with an invalid, out-of-state license. He presented a Michigan license that was
invalid because the Olympic champ didn’t pay an earlier fine and didn’t show
proof of insurance.
Phelps, who won 14 gold medals for swimming in the 2008
Olympics, has a history of driving under the influence. In 2004 he was pulled
over after running a stop sign. He pleaded guilty to DUI and was sentenced to
18 months probation.
