Jürgen Klinsmann to be Named Next Coach of U.S. Men’s Soccer Team

Jürgen Klinsmann is reportedly set to take the reins of the U.S. men’s soccer team within the next two weeks. The German born Klinsmann led his native country to a third place finish in the 2006 World Cup.

After the dismal performance put forth by the American’s at the recent World Cup the U.S. Soccer Federation relieved Bruce Arena of his head coaching duties. At that point there was wide speculation that they would attempt to land Klinsmann for the position.

Klinsmann, who lives in Southern California and is married to an American woman, was the obvious choice when potential candidates were mentioned for the post.

Despite expectations of an early exit Klinsmann led Germany into the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup and eventually a third place finish after defeating Portugal.

Known as the “Golden Bomber” as a player, he was a member of the German team that captured the World Cup in 1990.

Heading into the 2006 World Cup the U.S. men’s national team had enjoyed a #4 ranking in FIFA. Since their one-goal performance they have slipped to #31 in the most recent rankings, their lowest spot in over seven years.
