Suicide Bomb Attack on Russian Police Station Kills at least 20

A suicide bomb attack on a Russian police station in the southern republic of Ingushetia has left at least 20 people dead and more than 60 injured. The bomber reportedly rammed a vehicle packed with explosives into the gates of the police compound as the officers were lining up for a shift change, further adding to the number of casualties and injuries.

Ingushetia, bordering the often volatile Chechnya, has seen a rise in violence against Russian government forces and police as rebels continue to push for independence. Many now consider Ingushetia to be in a state of civil war, with Moscow determined to hold firm control of the republic.

Shortly after Monday’s attack Russian President Dmitry Medvedev fired Ingushetia’s interior minister, saying that the “act of terror could have been averted.”

Ingush President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, who is still recovering from a suicide attack on his motorcade back in June, has blamed militants for the most recent attack. He commented, “was an attempt to destabilize the situation and sow panic.”
