A New Jersey boy died Wednesday after being crushed by a collapsing sand tunnel on a Long Branch beach the day before. Local authorities say the 12-year-old Oakhurst resident passed away in the pediatric intensive care unit at Monmouth Medical Center.
According to reports, the unidentified boy was at the beach with his mother and younger brother when the 3-foot deep tunnel he built suddenly collapsed. His mother called 911 while lifeguards dug the boy out of the sand and performed CPR. The body was trapped for about 10 minutes and was not breathing when lifeguards freed him.
“It’s a tragedy. My heart goes out to the family. It’s just incomprehensible to all of us because we’ve been so focused on beach safety during the last two months since the drowning of Memorial Day Weekend. This just blows your mind,” said Long Branch Mayor Adam Schneider.
The boy’s family has not commented.
