U.S. Military officials confirm a Navy Helicopter carrying 5 crew members crashed in Oman Thursday. It is unclear if any of the crew members survived. A spokesman for U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said the crash was “not due to any hostile activity.”
According to the US Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain, the MH-53E Sea Dragon went down about 58 miles southwest of the capital of Muscat. The crash occurred while the MH-53E was “conducting heavy lift support operations.” A search and rescue mission has been launched and the cause of the crash is under investigation.
The chopper was assigned to the Norfolk, Virginia-based Helicopter Mine Countermeasure Squadron 15. No other details on the crash were released.
