Ex-Wife of Groom Blamed for Deadly Fire at Wedding Celebration in Kuwait

The ex-wife of a Kuwaiti groom has confessed to intentionally starting a fire at a wedding celebration that killed 43 women and children and left more than 90 injured on Saturday evening.

According to police the 23-year-old woman was still upset with her former husband and wanted revenge.

After the fire was set the more than 200 guests inside the tent rushed for the only exit, leaving several trampled and defenseless against the flames that consumed the structure within seconds. All the victims were women and children as wedding celebrations in the conservative Gulf state traditionally segregate along gender lines.

Reports have said the bride managed to escape the flames but her mother and sister were among those killed in the blaze, the worst civil disaster in Kuwait’s modern history.
