Dany Heatley, Olli Jokinen, Daniel Brier, and Slava Kozlov lead their teams to wins in NHL action from Tuesday.
Dany Heatley scored two goals and Jason Spezza added a goal and two assists as the Ottawa Senators (15-12-1) beat the New York Islanders (14-10-3) 4-2. Both Heatley and Spezza scored first period goals to give the Senators a 2-0 advantage. Heatley added his 18th goal of the year late in the third period. Jason Blake scored his 15th goal of the year for the Islanders.
Olli Jokinen scored a power play goal in the sixteenth minute of the third period to lift the Florida Panthers (9-15-5) past the Pittsburgh Penguins (11-11-4) 3-2. Sidney Crosby tied the score at 2-2 in the third before Jokinen found the back of the net. The win snapped a six game losing streak fro the Panthers. Jokinen also assisted on a Gary Roberts goal in the first period.
The Buffalo Sabres (21-4-2) fell behind 1-0 in the first minute of the first period but rallied to score three goals in the period along their way to a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning (13-13-2). It was the fourth loss in a row for Tampa. Daniel Briere led the Sabres with a hat trick and Ryan Miller stopped 29 of 30 shots for Buffalo.
After losing eight straight games to Toronto (13-11-5) the Atlanta Thrashers (18-7-4) have beaten the Maple Leaves twice in a week with their 5-2 victory on Tuesday. Toronto jumped to a 2-0 first period lead behind goals from Darcy Tucker and Michael Peca but Atlanta answered with five goals in the third period, two from Slava Kozlov. The Thrashers also had goals from Marian Hossa, Glen Metropolit, and an empty netter from Ilya Kovalchuk.
The Detroit Red Wings (15-7-4) scored three first period goals and built a 5-0 lead before finishing off the St. Louis Blues (7-16-3) 5-1. On a night when the Blues were honoring Brett Hull for his years of service, the former captain must have been thanking the hockey gods that he no longer wore the St. Louis jersey. Robert Lang scored a goal and added an assist for the Red Wings. Detroit added goals from Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Daniel Cleary, and Valtteri Filppula.
Pierre Marc-Bouchard scored the decider in the shootout as the Minnesota Wild (14-11-2) snapped their four-game losing streak and beat the Chicago Blackhawks (10-12-3) 3-2. Chicago led 2-1 after one period with goals from Brandon Bochenski and Bryan Smolinski, but Brian Rolston equalized for the Wild with his 14th goal of the season in the second period. Rolston recorded and assist in the first period when Todd White scored his 6th goal of the year.
Jarome Iginla scored his 14th goal of the season and added an assist as the Calgary Flames (13-10-2) shutout the Carolina Hurricanes (15-11-3) 3-0. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all 23 shots he faced in goal and the Flames got additional goals from Daymond Langkow and Roman Hamrlik to earn the win.
Fredrik Norrena stopped 42 shots and the Columbus Blue Jackets (8-16-2) got goals from Jason Chimera, Anson Carter, and Fredrik Modin as they shutout the Colorado Avalanche (12-13-2) 3-0. Carter was credited with an assist on Modin’s second period goal.
