Tanzanian Police Officers Cleared in Civilian Deaths

A Tanzanian court has cleared eight police officers of all charges related to the killings of four civilians in 2006.

The officers had been facing murder charges after mistakenly identifying the four civilians as armed robbers. Those killings took place shortly after police launched their “shoot-to-kill” policy as a means of curbing the rising number of armed robberies.

After the four civilians were gunned down the accused officers alleged the men had been suspected armed robbers who had hit a jewelry store. The officers went on to say the four men engaged them in a shootout at which time they returned fire, killing all four. An investigation later found that three of the men were gemstone dealers and the fourth was a taxi driver and there had been no shootout.

Despite what appeared to be enough supporting evidence Judge Salum Massati ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
