The New York Jets defense will be a bit lighter when the team opens its regular season after defensive end Shaun Ellis was suspended for one game and fined $100,000 by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
The suspension was a result of a traffic stop last November in which Ellis, a defensive captain for the Jest last year, was charged with possession of marijuana, driving without insurance and speeding.
With Ellis sidelined for the opener the Jets will be without two starters as linebacker Calvin Pace is serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
